Gardai have launched a murder investigation following the stabbing death of a man in Co Cork on Monday night.
The victim, who has been named as Daniel ‘Dan’ O’Sullivan, 31, was discovered with catastrophic stab injuries on the Main Street of Youghal following a suspected row outside a pub shortly after 10pm.
It is understood he managed to then make his way back inside the pub to ask for help - when he collapsed.
Gardaí and emergency services rushed to the scene and paramedics worked on Mr O’Sullivan on the ground before moving him to an ambulance. He was rushed to Cork University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
A post-mortem examination was carried out by the Assistant State Pathologist, Dr. Margot Bolster on Tuesday and preliminary results have been provided to the investigation team. Gardai said that these details are not being released for operational reasons.
Following the post-mortem, An Garda Síochána has now commenced a murder investigation.
A 29-year-old man, understood to be known to the victim, who was arrested on Monday in connection with the fatal stabbing remains detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in Co Cork.
A number of scenes subject to examination by the Garda Technical Bureau remain preserved at this time.
A senior investigating officer (SIO) is leading this investigation from the incident room at Midleton Garda Station. A family liaison officer (FLO) continues to provide support to the family of the deceased.
"Investigating Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to please come forward," a Garda spokesperson said in a statement.
"Anyone with information is asked to contact Midleton Garda Station on 021 4621550, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station."
Speaking exclusively to the Irish Mirror, Mr O’Sullivan’s sister Sam said she and her family are devastated over his loss - and will be seeking “justice” for his suspected murder.
“It’s a tragic loss. He was taken from us too soon. He was such a great big brother to his sisters. He had the biggest heart and was full of life. He looked out for everyone. He will be missed dearly by his friends and family,” she told us.
“We hope to get justice 100 per cent,” she added, telling us that her tragic brother was due to celebrate his 32nd birthday and that he was due to become an uncle in three weeks' time.
Mr O’Sullivan, who battled homelessness and addiction issues, had a prior conviction for the 2015 manslaughter of a French man in Cork city. However, his sister told us how in recent years his life was going well - and he had since secured a home with his girlfriend Ciara.
“He got a lovely apartment with his girlfriend, that he worked hard for and kept lovely. We want him to be remembered for what we know him as. It’s very tragic and we want him to be at peace.”
